Presentation
Hard gelatin capsules containing copper oxide. Copinox Ewe/Calf 4g capsules are equivalent to 3.48g metallic copper.
Uses
Copinox Ewe/Calf is indicated for the prevention and treatment of hypocuprosis in cattle and sheep.
Mode of action
A proportion of the administered copper oxide lodges in the abomasum of the treated animal. This provides a sustained-release source of copper for absorption from the gut for 2 to 3 months. Copper stored in the liver maintains blood levels. This steady supplementation ensures adequate copper status during periods of inadequate copper intake.
Dosage and administration
For oral administration only. Place the capsule at the back of the mouth, beyond the hump of the tongue, using a suitable dosing gun fitted with the special adaptors provided. The 4g capsule is inserted at one end and the other is attached to the drench gun. The capsule is ejected by expulsion with water. Conventional balling guns may also be employed. To avoid injury, the dosing gun should be used carefully and without force. Normal swallowing movements should allow the dose to be passed easily into the back of the mouth, the capsule may then be ejected and passage of the gun beyond this point is not necessary. Always check that the animal swallows the capsule.
Adult (50kg)Sheep Dosage
1 x Copinox Ewe/Calf 4g ivory capsule (equivalent to 80 mg CuO/kg for a 50kg sheep). For the prevention of congenital swayback the dose should be given at tupping or during the first half of pregnancy. It may be advisable to administer the dose during the second or third month of pregnancy rather than at tupping on farms where copper deficiency is particularly severe.
Calf Dosage
Ruminant calves, 75 to 100 kg bodyweight and over 2months of age, may be given 2 x Copinox Ewe/Calf 4g ivory capsules (equivalent to 80mg CuO/kg for a 100kg calf.
To be used at intervals of not less than 6 months
Contra-indications, warnings, etc
Withdrawal periods
Meat - zero days
Milk - zero days
Do not use unless copper deficiency is known to exist or known to be a risk. Do not administer to pre-ruminant animals. Do not use in calves under 75kg bodyweight or less than 2 months of age. No other form of copper supplementation should be given immediately prior to or 6 months after administration of the capsules. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Copper toxicity may lead to the following clinical signs; thirst, apathy, haemolytic crises, anaemia, jaundice, hepatic necrosis, and death. Care must be taken when dosing animals to avoid causing injury to the mouth and pharynx. Caution is advised before treating housed sheep and those breeds known to be susceptible to copper toxicity (e.g. North Ronaldsay and Texel). For animal use only. Keep out of the reach of children.
Pharmaceutical precautions
Gelatin capsules are relatively fragile; handle with care, and protect from moisture, frost, heat and light. Do not store above 25°C. Store in a dry place in the tightly closed original container. Partly used containers should be closed.

Further information
Primary copper deficiency arises from a direct shortage of copper in the diet whereas secondary copper deficiency results from the antagonistic effects of elements such as molybdenum and sulphur upon absorption. Copinox is an effective long acting supplement in both cases. The severity of copper deficiency, whether of primary or secondary origin, varies greatly from farm to farm. Veterinary surgeons may need to adapt their advice to suit local conditions.
