Presentation

A clear, colourless, sterile, aqueous solution containing Pethidine Hydrochloride 50 mg per ml and Chlorocresol 0.1 % w/v (as a preservative).

Uses

Pethidine Injection is recommended for use as a sedative analgesic in dogs and cats, and as an analgesic for the symptomatic relief of pain in spasmodic colic in horses.

Dosage and administration

Dogs and cats by intramuscular injection: 3.3 mg/kg for premedication prior to surgical procedures and examination, as an adjunct to sedation or anaesthesia, or post-operatively as an analgesic.

Horses by intramuscular injection: 2.0 mg/kg for the relief of pain in spasmodic colic.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

For intramuscular injection only. Do not administer by the intravenous route.

Do not exceed the stated dose.

Care should be taken with concomitant use of sedatives, analgesics and depressants as the depressant effects may be potentiated.

Appropriate dose adjustments should be made.

Do not use in cases where renal function is impaired.

The safety of the product in pregnancy has not been established.

Do not use in horses with obstructive colic.

If you notice any serious effects or other effects not mentioned in the leaflet, please inform your veterinary surgeon.

Overdosage: Overdosage or intravenous injection may result in CNS stimulation and convulsions. These effects may be controlled by Diazepam or Pentobarbitone injection. Respiratory depression may be controlled by Nalorphine Hydrochloride.

Operator warnings: Following accidental self-injection or ingestion, seek medical advice taking the vial with you.

Following eye contamination or excessive skin contact, irrigate/wash thoroughly with cold running water. Seek medical advice if irritation persists.

General precautions: For animal treatment only.

Withdrawal period: Not to be used in horses intended for human consumption. Treated horses may never be slaughtered for human consumption. The horse must have been declared as not intended for human consumption under national horse passport legislation.

Pharmaceutical precautions

Do not store above 25°C. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Do not use after the expiry date stated on the label.

The time between the withdrawal of the first dose and the final doses from the container should not exceed one month. When the container is broached (opened) for the first time, the date on which any product remaining in the container should be discarded should be worked out. This discard date should be written in the space provided on the label.

Disposal: Destroy any unused product in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Dispose of any part-used and empty containers in accordance with guidance from your local waste regulation authority.
