Presentation

An inactivated adjuvanted liquid vaccine of porcine parvovirus grown on porcine tissue culture.

Uses

For primary and booster vaccination of healthy susceptible, immune competent gilts, sows and boars against parvovirus. Parvovirus infection in pregnant gilts or sows can cause embryonic death, mummification and stillbirth. Infection shortly before or after service can cause infertility.

Dosage and administration

A single dose of 2 ml should be administered by intramuscular injection.

Gilts, minimum age 6 months

Owing to the likely presence of maternally derived antibody (MDA) in gilts up to 6 months of age, the following dosage regime is recommended

1st dose

From 8 weeks to 2 weeks before their first service.

Booster doses

After farrowing and at least 2 weeks before their next service.

Thereafter not less frequently than once a year and at least 2 weeks before the appropriate service.

Sows

1st dose

After farrowing and at least 2 weeks before their next service.

Booster doses

Not less frequently than once a year, at least 2 weeks before the appropriate service.

Boars

1st dose

At 6–7 months of age.

2nd dose

6 months later.

Booster doses

Annually.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

FOR ANIMAL TREATMENT ONLY

Shake well before use. Only healthy pigs should be vaccinated. Aseptic precautions should be observed. Use entire contents when first opened. Syringes should not have been sterilised chemically or be above ambient temperature. Dispose of used container by incineration or after immersion in an approved disinfectant.

In the event of an allergic or anaphylactic reaction immediate treatment should be given with a soluble glucocorticoid intravenously (e.g. dexamethasone sodium phosphate) or adrenaline intramuscularly.

Animals that have received the corresponding antiserum or immunosuppressive drugs (e.g. glucocorticoids) should not be vaccinated until an interval of at least 4 weeks has elapsed.

Pharmaceutical precautions

Store at between +2°C and +8°C and use before the expiry date printed on the pack. Do not freeze.

Legal category

Further information

In any animal population there will be a small number of individuals which fail to respond fully to vaccination. Successful vaccination depends upon correct storage and administration of the vaccine and the animal's ability to respond. Immune competence can be influenced by genetic factors, intercurrent infection, age, nutritional status, concurrent drug therapy, stress, etc.

Maternally derived antibody (MDA) can interfere with the development of active immunity. Where it is likely that recent field infection or vaccination of the dam has stimulated a high antibody titre and consequently a high level of MDA, the timing of the vaccination programme should be planned accordingly.

Animals may become or remain seropositive to parvovirus after vaccination.

Although parvovirus can be a major cause of reproductive failure, it should be noted that it is not the only cause of these conditions in the pig.
