Presentation
A water-soluble powder for oral administration, contained in paired sachets marked A and B, which forms a pink solution on mixing with water.
Composition (Active ingredients) | |
Sachet A | |
Glycine | 3.0g |
Sodium Chloride | 4.6g |
Sodium Citrate | 0.7g |
Potassium Citrate | 3.2g |
Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate | 1.4g |
Sodium Acid Citrate | 1.8g |
Sachet B | |
Dextrose Monohydrate | 62.7g |
When the contents of each paired sachet (A and B) are dissolved in 2 litres of water, Lectade Plus forms a solution of the following concentration: 50 mM sodium; 20 mM potassium; 39 mM chloride; 10 mM citrate (equivalent to 28.5 mM bicarbonate); 5 mM phosphate; 160 mM glucose; 20 mM glycine.
Uses
Lectade Plus is an oral rehydration therapy which is indicated for the treatment of scour in calves.
Lectade Plus acts by reversing the process of dehydration, acidosis and loss of electrolytes associated with diarrhoea, whether caused by bacteria, viruses, cryptosporidia or inappropriate nutrition.
Dosage and administration
Lectade Plus is for oral administration only.
Prepare a fresh solution before each dose by adding the contents of each paired sachet (A and B) to 2 litres (3½ pints) of warm water at a temperature of about 35°C.
Immediately signs of scour are seen, withdraw milk or milk replacer and feed 2 litres of solution, made up as directed, twice daily for 2 days (4 feeds). For the next 4 feeds use 1 litre of Lectade Plus solution mixed with 1 litre of milk or milk replacer. Thereafter feed as normal. If scouring is established or severe, causing serious dehydration, the 2 litres of solution should be fed 3 or 4 times daily.
Duration of treatment: Lectade Plus may be used on its own for a maximum of 4 days.
Lectade Plus may be used on its own or in conjunction with oral antibiotics such as amoxicillin, ampicillin and oxytetracycline.
Always feed Sachet A and Sachet B together.
Contra-indications, warnings, etc
Keep feeding utensils clean and avoid overfeeding.
Adequate colostrum should be fed to calves.
Normal feeding should be resumed after the course of treatment.
Discard any unused solution after 24 hours.
Withdrawal period: meat - zero days.
For animal use only. Keep out of the reach of children.

Further information
Effective oral rehydration therapy depends on the active absorption of dextrose and glycine in the small intestine. This absorption is directly linked with water and sodium movement. The net result of Lectade Plus treatment, therefore, is a reversal of fluid and electrolyte loss incurred during diarrhoea.
The formulation of Lectade Plus has been specifically designed to improve both water absorption from the intestine and the correction of acidosis. The increased dose of dextrose provides more energy for the calf, but without overloading the dextrose-absorbing capacity of the intestine or interfering with rehydration.
