Presentation

Light grey powder for incorporation in animal feed containing 125g sulphadiazine and 25g trimethoprim per kg.

Uses

For use in the treatment of diseases caused by bacteria sensitive to the combination sulphadiazine : trimethoprim.

Pigs

Reduces mortality from streptococcal meningitis in pigs caused by the bacteria Streptococcus suis Type II.

For the treatment of atrophic rhinitis in pigs where associated with Bordetella bronchiseptica infection.

For the treatment of mastitis, metritis and agalactia (MMA) of bacterial origin in sows.

Non-laying chickens

For use in the treatment of diseases caused by bacteria sensitive to the combination sulphadiazine : trimethoprim. Bacteria which may be sensitive include, E. coli, Salmonella spp and Pasteurella multocida.

Dosage and administration

The product should be incorporated in animal feedingstuffs at the following rates, mixed thoroughly and administered for the periods specified.

Growing pigs

(5–90 kg): 2–3 kg product per 1000 kg feed administered for five consecutive days, resulting in a target dose rate of 14.4 mg combined active/kg bodyweight/day.

Sows

6.5 kg product per 1000 kg feed administered for three consecutive days prior to parturition and 2 days thereafter, resulting in a target dose rate of 7.8 mg combined active/kg bodyweight/day.

Non-laying chickens

2 kg product per 1000 kg of finished feed, administered for ten consecutive days, resulting in a target dose rate of 35 mg combined active/kg bodyweight/day.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

Withdrawal period

Animals must not be slaughtered for human consumption during treatment. Animals may be slaughtered for human consumption only after the following periods from the last treatment.

Pigs

5 days from last treatment.

Non-laying Chickens

2 days from last treatment.

Not to be used in chickens producing eggs for human consumption.

Contra-indications

It is important that the in vitro sensitivity of the involved pathogen is established before use.

To avoid the possibility of crystalluria, adequate water intake is essential. Particular care is needed with animals suffering from renal damage.

Operator Warnings

Persons handling this product should avoid inhalation of any dust and contact with skin. Wear either a disposable half-mask respirator conforming to European Standard EN149 or a non-disposable respiratory to European Standard EN140 with a filter to EN143, when mixing or handling this product. Rubber gloves should be worn when mixing or handling this product. Hands and exposed skin should be washed thoroughly after use.

Sulphonamides may cause hypersensitivity (allergy) following injection, inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Hypersensitivity to sulphonamides may lead to cross reactions with other antibiotics. Allergic reactions to these substances may occasionally be serious.

Do not handle this product if you know you are sensitive to sulphonamides.

If you develop symptoms following exposure such as a skin rash, you should seek medical advice and show the doctor this warning.

Pharmaceutical precautions

Do not store above 25°C. Store in a dry place. Protect from light. The product remains stable in non-pelleted and pelleted feed for up to 4 weeks.

Keep out of reach of children.

If this product is incorporated in an intermediate feeding stuff, care should be taken to ensure that the intermediate feeding stuff is incorporated at a rate which will yield the same concentration of active ingredient in the final feed as stated in the dosage schedule.
